A  Boy Named Perseverance

There is a boy on our team whose name is Perseverance. He is smaller than most and has less talent than others. However, he always comes to practice – rain or shine. He has a cheerful disposition and is happy to be part of the Vikings tradition. When he is knocked to the ground, he grinds his teeth through his mouth-guard, wipes the dirt from his facemask and goes to the end of the line with confidence and a smile asking: “Can I try again Coach?”

This boy named Perseverance is a true Vikings warrior. He just does his thing – he doesn’t care about the last play or the next. He just plays for the moment, looking up with his glazed eyes opened wide and asking: “When can I go back on Coach?”

We go through life worrying about tomorrow and nostalgic about the past when all we should be doing is living for the moment. The message from our Vikings warrior named Perseverance is crystal clear: time doesn’t wait around forever, we got to do it right now: wait any longer and that time will pass.

Some of you will be heading to the finals and all of you have the talent to succeed. However, as with anything else in life, talent is not enough – You must play with your heart and every fiber of your body and, believe me, if you do you will succeed.

The Coaches have demonstrated their pride. The faces of the parents and boosters are etched with the same pride. If you are knocked down, get back up, wipe the dirt off your facemask and go on…

When all is said and done you will have played with all your heart, allowing each of you to discover where your chance for greatness lies. Now seize that chance!

There is this boy named Perseverance…
